Vassallo smashes record in marathon debut

Dan Vassallo of Wilmington, Mass., had ambitious goals for his first marathon -- run a sub-2:30 and win the race. The 22-year-old Colby College graduate succeeded on both accounts. Not only did Vassallo leave two former Maine Marathon champions well behind, he sliced more than three minutes off the course record set a year earlier by Byrne Decker. Vassallo completed the 26.2-mile route in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 54 seconds as he crossed the line more than six minutes ahead of his closest competitor, 2003 champion Casey Carroll, 26, of Dover, N.H. (2:33:22). Decker, 40, of Yarmouth was unable to add to his collection of six Maine Marathon titles but did finish third in 2:35.56.


The women's race was an even bigger runaway, as Stephanie Crawford, 30, of Framingham, Mass., had a 9-minute gap over the rest of the pack. Crawford's time was 3:01:16. Suzanne La Burt, 44, of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., was second in 3:10:14, and Nadine Palmer, 39, of Derry, N.H., placed third in 3:11:31.


The Dirigo Masters dominated the relay division, cruising to victory in 2:32:39.


The women's half marathon featured the day's closest finish, with Sheri Piers, 36, of Falmouth claiming victory in 1:19:49, just 21 seconds ahead of Scarborough's Kristin Barry, 33, who placed second for the second year in a row.


P.J. Gorneault, 28, of Caribou was the overall half marathon winner in 1:12.24. Mark Goettel, 40, of Cumberland was second with a time of 1:14:20.
