Maine Marathon, Half MarathonOct. 3, 2010, 7:45 a.m. |
Since 1997, the Maine Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay and its participants have raised nearly $2,500,000 for charity.
Each year, event organizers designate a local charity as the main beneficiary of race proceeds, and entrants are invited to make additional donations to that charity. Proceeds from the 2008 and 2009 benefitted the Center for Grieving Children, a local organization that provides support to grieving children, teens, families and the community through peer support, outreach and education. A total of $60,000 was raised through race proceeds and another $40,000 was raised in donations by race participants.
In addition, the following groups received donations totaling $9,540 in 2009: City of Portland, Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Bayside Little League, the Maine School of Massage Therapy, the Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth police departments for youth and/or fuel assistance programs and the Maine Army National Guard. Also, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program raised $160,000 through its Massachusetts and Rhode Island chapters, and the Nativity Preparatory School in Boston raised $35,000.
For 2010 and 2011, Camp To Belong Maine has been chosen as the official race charity. Contact the race directors if you are interested in becoming a future beneficiary.
